What is min-maxing in text-based games?
Min-maxing is a strategy used in roleplaying games (RPGs) where a player minimizes certain traits or skills that are deemed less important and maximizes others that are more beneficial to their game objectives.
This is usually done to create a character that is exceptionally powerful in one or more specific areas, thereby optimizing their effectiveness in the game. A classic pattern is dumping points from a stat the build rarely leans on (say, charisma on a melee bruiser) and pouring them into the numbers that drive damage, survivability, or whatever the game rewards most.
Min-maxing focuses on exploiting game mechanics to gain the biggest possible advantage within the game’s rules. It overlaps heavily with powergaming and, at its most single-minded, with munchkin play, though min-maxing is really just the math behind those: the deliberate trade of weak points for strong ones. The goal is often an overpowered build that outperforms more evenly balanced characters.
In text-based games, min-maxing shows up most during character generation, when you spend a fixed pool of points, and again whenever the rules shift and an old build has to be reworked. How far a group tolerates it depends on whether the game leans competitive or story-first.
