What is a moderator in text-based games and online roleplay?
A moderator, often found in games with chatrooms and forums, is a staff member or volunteer tasked with assisting new players, maintaining order, and enforcing the rules and standards of the game.
Moderators act as guides, rule enforcers, and community managers, keeping the game environment welcoming, respectful, and fun for everyone. To do that, they often have the authority to mute, ban, or remove players who violate community guidelines. Day to day, though, most of the job is quieter than that: answering questions from newbies, cooling down arguments on OOC channels, and stepping in on trolling or griefers before they drive other players away.
Moderators usually sit in the middle of a game’s staff structure. They handle people and conduct, while other staff handle the game itself: coders and builders shape the world, and administrators set the rules moderators enforce. In many MU* games there’s no separate moderator team at all; senior staff called immortals or wizards generally fold moderation duties into their broader role.
The role of the moderator has evolved alongside online gaming communities, originating from the early days of internet forums and chat rooms.
