# Updates

A running list of various updates to the site, including both behind-the-scenes fixes and new content.

## 2026

### May 2026

- New [Resources area](https://resources.writing-games.org) on its own subdomain, with fast-loading subpages instead of one long page.

### April 2026

- Disabled Cloudflare's tracking / analytics beacon. Wish I'd remembered to do this sooner.
- Replaced Google events calendar embed with native plugin - finally!
- Site now serves post and page content in Markdown to robots for annoying [GEO](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generative_engine_optimization) reasons.
- Installed a new custom-built schema plugin that correctly handles everything to spec.
- Added email validation to forms and new form type to replace existing iframe newsletter signup.
- Replaced glossary links with inline contextual help so readers don't have to go off-page to learn what terms like OOC, appless, or pwipe mean.
- Fixed the entries for March to say March instead of February - apparently I forgot what month it was when I wrote them...
- New [interview with Mo and Hiro](https://writing-games.org/nukefire-mud/) about NukeFire MUD!

### March 2026

- Added a side nav for the [MU\* Resources page](https://writing-games.org/mud-resources/) (desktop & tablet only)
- Added a new [Screen Reader Preview](https://writing-games.org/screen-reader-preview/) tool and linked it in the nav menu
- Added a [Discord page](https://writing-games.org/discord/) that links to the Discord server
- New [interview with bscross](https://writing-games.org/accessibility-interview-bscross/) on accessibility in MU\*s!

### February 2026

- Took a 3-week break to recover from the site overhaul

### January 2026

- Continuation of site overhaul 😅 ...it's a lot
- Migrated from .com to .org -- please update your links!!
- Replaced ALL other png/jpg images on the site with webp, with improved alt text
- Removed alt text in many cases where images were decorative
- Uploaded refreshed pngs for use with Open Graph (not all platforms consistently serve webp yet...)
- Finished implementing new [Support options](https://writing-games.org/support/) - supporters can now contribute without going through Ko-fi and can view all bonus content right here on the site
- Updates to make the site less Andruid-centric: 
    - Updated the About page and moved personal FAQs to my author page
    - Updated social icons/links in top bar and footer
- Added LinkedIn icon/link to top bar and footer
- Reviewed the [Privacy Policy](https://writing-games.org/privacy-policy/) again in honor of Data Privacy Week - removed the part about social logins, as it's no longer applicable, and added a section about donations and account creation
- Fixed an .htaccess rule that was blocking all comments because it still used .com instead of .org (was wondering why it was so quiet...)
- Schema fixes for author pages, new Authors page to satisfy breadcrumbs, implemented co-authors to make it clearer which posts were written as a joint effort/collab

## 2025

### December 2025

- Major rework and cleanup of the site's layout and styles - archives are now full-width, for example
- Built a lightweight form plugin and replaced Forminator (3rd party form plugin)
- Updated the Privacy Policy accordingly
- Refreshed all featured images (posts AND pages) at a standard size
- Converted site logo and all new featured images from png to webp for performance
- Removed obsolete image titles
- Improved accessibility of breadcrumbs and nav
- Improved alt text, better use of .screen-reader-text class and aria-hidden=true
- Added a new [Contributors page](https://writing-games.org/contributors/)
- Added a new CYOA-style 404 template
- Updated the primary nav menu and added new categories

### November 2025

- Various improvements to templates and security
- Added FAQs and FAQPage schema to category archives
- Improved the output of titles and meta on paginated pages

### October 2025

- Published an interview with [Morwen of Cryosphere](https://writing-games.org/cryosphere-satirical-sci-fi-mud/)!
- Fixes to prevent comment spam, block spam bots (it was getting out of control...)
- Fixed an issue that was preventing FAQPage schema from being applied to pages with FAQs

### September 2025

- Published an interview with [Niymiae of Lumen et Umbra](https://writing-games.org/lumen-et-umbra-mud/)!
- Added Titans of Text podcast to Resources (Spotify link)
- Moved the site to a different host
- Configured caching, security, etc.
- Updated Litlyx script for cookieless analytics

### August 2025

- Published an interview with [Asmodeus of MudVault](https://writing-games.org/mudvault/)!
- Fixed the aria labels for top bar social buttons
- Swapped out Threads button/link for GitHub
- Fixed centering of images with captions
- Started this updates page
